Hi Andrew C,

Widlwoods is fairly local to me, but the last time I was there their zebras were up for sale at £125. If you say that their new batch are priced at £80 I'd better get down there quick, hope they've got some females left.

Cheers mate.

Adam
Hopefully it was Wildwoods that quoted that price, i phoned a few shops.

I think it was and the owner said they are smaller ones he has for sale just now, that the ones in quarentene were larger and are going to be dearer.

Well the pair of Zebras i ordered arrived today, Dead :(

Posted them back today and the shop's owner will phone me tomorrow.
There usual policy is to send another pair free of charge, but they were the last pair, so it better be a refund !

Anybody have any Zebras for sale, that they can mail order ?

Hi Andrew C,

Sorry to hear that the 2 mail order zebras were DOA, that's a real shame.
I would have suggested Trimar as they do mail order but they don't have any zebras and are unlikely to get any. Your best bet is going to be to check Uk classifieds regularly for any that come up as private sales, only problem is they are likely to be sold on a collection only basis.

I checked with wild woods today they have 7 zebras left that are priced at £125 each. They have another 10(German wild caught?) that are currently in quarantine, these will be priced at £165  . I spoke at length with the fish sales manager, Keith, about the future availability of zebras. He said that there will be no more exports from Brazil. However he has managed to get a German supplier who will be able to supply him fairly regularly, however the prices are much higher. He stated that his next batch from Germany are likely to be around the £200 mark

I querried the German origin of the fish and asked if they were F1s but Keith said that they were definately wild caught :? Apparently some German suppliers have been stock piling zebras over the last 2 years as they anticipated the ban. Another twist in the zebra saga, make of it what you want I don't know what is fact and rumour anymore.

I can believe that, a German supplier stock piling Zebras for the last couple of years I mean. I remember somebody mention that they had been at a German Discus fair, a three day long exhibit kind of thing. This was during the temporary export ban last year. There was one guy there that had hundreds of Zebras. He had 50 the first day, and when those were sold out he came back the next day with 50 more. I think it was on this forum this was posted?

You wouldn't happen to know the name of this supplier Adam? I know there's a shop in Norway that would like to import some, I could tip them off about this supplier.

Hi All,
What is a pity that Andrews zebras arrived Dead on Arrival . (It must have been the extremely cold weather ,inspite of the polystyrene boxes). It does say on the boxes "keep warm" but couriers take no notice of this.Thats 2 less that could have been bred from.
A few months ago I had ordered a lot of Altums mail order from the same supplier. 3 were received where their bags had almost completely leaked and they never survived. They did keep their word and when I visited their shop a couple of weeks later replaced them without a fuss. While there, did see some zebras there but they had arrived at the shop in a very bad condition, finrot etc and decided that I wouldnt take a risk with that particular batch. In fact the owner wasnt keen on selling them until they had improved.
What is even worse is that certain Suppliers have been "stockpiling" zebras to make a huge profit. Was or is this stockpiling !!!!!!!! or the illegal export of zebras using false identities?. No one will know.
Regards,
Des.

One can be outraged by the fact that somebody will take advantage of people wanting Zebras, and that they take advantage of them now being hard to come by. But the fact remain that people trading in ornamental fish do it because they want to make a living, and like any business man they will charge what the market is willing to give.

If there is indeed a stock piling, we don't know that there is, but if there is, then that will benefit all those who wants to buy Zebras now. It sounds cynical I know, but we can't all be idealists - if all were, there wouldn't be any Zebras on the market at all. I think most would probably be upset with the dealer that has saved his stock, but most will probably still buy them.

But I agree with the moral side of it, and don't condone it, just for the record. Just looking at realities.

Dartford have none left I tried there three weeks ago, the guy said he doubted that they would be getting any more in because of the ban, but he said he was still looking around europe, so I put my name down for 4 just in case.

I have been speaking to other people in chatrooms about zebras and one supplier in Asia has stockpiled several hundred, (from memory i think he said 800  ). He has been accumulating over the last year or so in anticipation of a price increase. I offered him some money about 6months ago fro some but he said he was waiting for US$175-200 before he released his stock. Arghhhhh  :x

He is hoping to sell to wholesalers in Asia as they will pay much more than Americans & Europeans, apparantly!
