Ok, Im giving this another try. Hopefully I can get some breeding going on in here. I read another post about a slate bottom so I figured I would try it. I just wasnt willing to go bare bottom and was hesitant of sand. The bubble wand in th back I just figured I would try. I never had one and always thought the were dorky. I might get rid of it. I will also be adding some potted Java ferns and sword plants.
The big question. Will slate with all the rusty looking colors leach anything harmful in the water?????? Im kinda nervous about it.
It looks really cool!! I have some slate with some rust as well but it didnt bother them! But at first I tried to scrub it as much as possible!! .Good luck with you breeding setup!
Nice!!!
Did you use silicone around the sides to keep wee ones from falling into the cracks. Is it just one piece or several. I can't really tell from the photo.
I'm stealing your concept as we speak, hope you don't mind
I'm using silikon to stick the slate to the bottom, and also make sure to cover the cracks. This is for the safety of the fry as well as preventing food from getting under the slate (or tiles as I use) and go bad in a place where I can't get to it
make sure you remove any sharp edges from the slate, if it can cut you it will cut a zeb just as easy especially if you have to males having a go at each other,
I used 12X12 unguaged slate. They fit perfect. I did not silicone them to the bottom so I can easily clean the tank. There is no gap for particles to get under. I introduced the zebs today. So far so good.
I was going to put it on the back, but it looked like a tiled floor when I placed it up there. Way to unatural. The floor blends together with the caves and slate.

Yes, now that you mention it, I can see that it would blend in.
I like your idea of a slate floor and the sand idea. I love McEve’s tanks. Hopefully one day but for today, I just combined the two (slate bottom & sandy bottom) and will post pictures soon.
Tanks looks good, they say imitation is the greatest form of flattery. I hope you don't mind me using your idea.

I'm with that one! I now have moved all the terrace tank inmates to a tileonly tank. Tiles on the back, and a sandycolor tile on the bottom. You can see it on the webcam here http://www.zebrapleco.com/zebcam.php, altho it doesn't show how it looks all that well. I'll post a picture asap.
(I can't not having plants, so I bought a piece of bogwood and stuck a Javafern to it )
Well, here it is... The technical stuff isn't set up right yet, and I'm sure there'll be some changes in the layout as time pass and I see what the fish prefer in this tank, but... My first tank with no sand! wow
I think it's time for a comp with best tank with plants, and best tank without plants! My tanks are exluded anyway, but maybe it's about time for a comp with that theme. What do you think?
McEve, am I seeing the tile background on the outside of the tank?

Sounds good to me.

Thank God, no one can hold a candle to you. Seriously, your tanks are absolutely beautiful. I've been dying to set up a tank like yours with the 3D background. My 60 gallon will need a couple of pieces for the back and then I wanted one to cut up like you did to create a terrace. I just can't talk my husband into it. It will have to be awhile anyway, I just redid my tank. I posted it http://www.zebrapleco.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1814 and was hoping for some constructive criticism but so far nothing.
I'll think I'll post a request for comments and recommendations.
Lrry93, I think you’ve started something with this slate tile thing.

No, there all on the inside.

I think so too It's good to see others ideas and see what works and what doesn't.
Thank you for your kind comments about my tanks khblock, but that's not true at all. I see several ideas and setups that I find very nice on this site!! And that's what it's all about isn't it, exchanging ideas
