Aquabid.com Auction-What is it really?

Post by fishboy20 »

There is an interesting set of plecos on aquabid.com right now. They are labeled as l-287 but look more like l-250's to me. Thinking about bidding on them, give me your input:

Hi Fishboy,

I would say that plec looks like L236 to me due to the large propotion of white to black and the deeply forked tail. The Datz entry for L250 shows a fish with a "blunt" tail as opposed to a deeply forked tail. Well worth buying so long as the bidding doesn't go crazy and the other two look similar.

Hi Fishboy,

I was just on our new member Sven.T's site and I found some pictures of L287(?) "Belo Monte". :? They look very similar to the fish up for auction on Aquabid that you are interested in. One of them is very close in looks to the entry for L236 in Datz, thick black almost vertical bars. I still say that they are well worth bidding for.

Great website by the way Sven.T. :D

Hi,

im was surprised to read my name in this topic, but now this is a good moment to give some information.

Yes - the AquBid Auction shows 100% a Hypancistrus which I call (and some other guy too :D ) Hypancistrus sp. "Belo Monte". Now i know that the number L287 is not right. I will change this in the following days.

It is a long story why i gave them the number L287 an why i do now think that this isn't correct.

Greetings from Germany,
Sven

The fish in this auction are without a doubt the same fish that I recently bought as L173. I now have two batches of them, and in watching their behavior, I'm not going to have to worry about combining them, IMO. They definitely are the same species of fish. When I posted detailed pictures of them at PC, Yann said they are L287, not L236. Mine were collected at Altamira I was told.

The fish in the auction definitely aren't L236, IMO.

Hi Barbie,

Do you happen to have any pictures of your new L173s?

OK, I added 50 pictures or so to the galleries. There's one gallery for the first batch of L173 or whateverthehecktheyare that can be found Here and a second gallery for the fish I just got two days ago that were also purchased as L173 (yes, I knew they weren't before I bought them) that can be seen Here.

There are 5 fish in each group, and as you can see there is a HUGE variation amongst them. The second group I had to stress pretty good to get out visible for picture time. The first group didn't panic as badly this time, and didn't fade like they did the time before.

Either way, the whole thing makes my brain ache. Good luck and thanks for any light anyone can shed on the subject ;).

GREAT FISH, not matter what L# they are!!!
Some of your "L173" look like my L236.....One breeder told me to look at there bellys and a true L236 has a all white belly while L333, L66 and L173 the bands run through the belly...Don't know how true that is since I don't have any of those.....

But great fish!!!

Thanks for the Pics Barbie,

The new L173s are certainly very different from the first batch you got. There is a lot of variability within the second group, a few of them look very similar to some of my "L236". As Jerms said, great looking fish regardless of what L# they are.
