Water change ?

I usually change 1/3 of the water every 14 days.

I use cold tap water, and the temperatur falls about 4-5 degres celsius.
The adult zebras have no problem with this.

But now i have 4 little fry in the tank, will they survive it ?

I am not sure about zebra fry but both malawi & discus fry that i have raised like water perameters to be identical. A fluctuation of temperature may well shock fry, but i will leave the opinion with zebras to others who have actually bred them.

Hi Tom,

I'm sure that I read somewhere in another thread that Barbie still simulates rainy seasons dispite there being fry in the tank. She has had no problems if I remember correctly, best to check with her first as I'm at not sure how old her fry are.

Personally I can't see it being a problem. In the wild there will always be some temperature fluctuations, fry or no fry.

If your worried about the temp dropping too much, here's a handly little calculator that can help....

"This program determines the temperature change that will be produced by conducting a partial water change using water that is of a different temperature to the aquarium water.

If you're adding cold water this program can also calculate how much boiling water you need to add in order to maintain a stable temperature in the tank."

Ooops, slow replying on this one, sorry! Yes, I still stimulate the rainy seasons with the fry still in the tank with no problems or losses. It MAY put the fry off feeding heavily for a day or two, so I'd assume they aren't fond of the idea, but they will definitely survive it. If you're worried, you could do half as much of a change every week so the tank temperature wouldn't fluctuate as far, also.

Apology number two from me. Sorry for the late reply.

The only time I refrain from a "cold water change" is when I have eggs in a breeder, otherwise, I continue as usual.

I would suggest warming the water a little however if you are going to carry out any more than a 30% water change. Even just leaving it at room temp for a couple of hours should be enough.

Thanks for the answers.

I have now changed about 20% with tap water and the fry seems ok.
Temp droppet from 29 degres celsius til about 26.5 degres celsius.
