Yep .have been know to keep discus from time to time ..............only have 70 at the moment though ..........i did at 1 point have around 600.............wow .what a busy summer that was.
You say you seen some in a system ,not looking too good .what were the symptoms?............watch what yer doing matie.even once they are well ,they will still be carrying bugs .............bet it columnairus..........still evedent after 6 months of q-teen ...........ive seen it ,done it .bought the t-shirt

Sid, hi again, yes I have bred them but only a couple of times as i don't have an RO unit or the space for grow on tanks, The discus bred in my community set up and i got about 20 fish to a couple of inches before selling them on, since then i haven't bothered to put a divider into my tank to let them breed in peace.
Des, there are sone great discus coming from Vietnam at the oment, we have some superb cobolts in my LFs, i went in todat though and they were looking a bit dark as tehy had been moved - again in with plecs. having said that, the guy looking after them breeds discus at home and does know what he is doing, but in a shop, space appears to be too short for a specialist discus set up.
I also love Chekcerboard discus, just haven't got any yet. If you are buying discus from a shop i would quarantine and use Huey hung treatments, they will bring a discus back from death's door.

The symptoms of the poorly ones were dark colour , almost black, shedding of mucous, some had cloudy eyes, and some had gillfins closed.
The strange thing is that the fish from vietnam seem ok and the ones originating from Thailand are ill, after the Vietnam ones were put on the system about a week ago.
I would say that I can hold my own ,when it comes to discus treatments, but would rather see that all fish on the system are well, than buy some too soon,that have the latent diseases.In any case I would still treat them for bacteria, internal and external parasites, during my own quarantine.
I have recently started using Flubendazole (Flubenol) - which I obtained from a mail order vet supplies-which is like some miracle cure.It is a internal wormer but also cures velvet, other external parasites as well as spironucleus(hole in the head), which I have had recently in some of my Altum angels where they wouldnt eat and produced jelly faeces.

Funnily enough (or not as the case may be) it was the Vietnamise lot that were looking dark and ill in my LFS, They recon that they had the plague a year or so ago - so rightly or wrongly i am still a little nervous about buying fish from there -do you guys have any info on it etc?

BTW did i say that my girlfriend is in Singapore at the moment, on a work assignment (if you can call taking photos of lady golfers work)

, I don't know how as I spend enough time here. I've seen the Cichilids I want they are called Frontosa. My LFS has setup a show tank with them in and they look fantastic. They look like they get to a decent size too as there are a couple of biguns in there. The two larger specimens have a hump like growth on the forehead, I'm guessing that this is some sort of sexual characteristic. Another thing I've noticed is that some of the youngsters in the tank have a distinct bluey sheen colour, would this be to do with them being immature or is this a subspecies? Would they be a good species for a novice are they for the intermediate/expert aquarist only? Why are F1s half the price of wild caughts and which should I go for. Sorry for bombarding you with silly questions I really should have done some research on them first. Any info you can give will be much appreciated.
Tristan, Des and Sid stop it with the Discus thing otherwise I'll end up getting them too and my wife will end up divorcing me for sure.
Frontosa are great fish. Very big and majestic. Not too smart, which can sometimes work in your favor, and other times not so much 
. Differing variants have more or less blue, depending. We have the "Zaire Moba" locational variant. They are from the southern part of the lake, so they are actually classified as gibberosa now . Confused yet? :p This is one of our females. This variant is well known for the dark blue coloring. Without the flash they're so blue they look purple.
Fronts aren't terribly aggressive, and are one of the few fish I'd have no problem mixing with some of the haps from Lake Malawi that have similar dietary needs.

Frontosas are great, there are a load of different morphs depending where on the lake you look (lake Tanganyika that is) They live at great depths depths in the lake and have to be "decompressed" over several days hence the cost of Wild capture. They are a cult fish at the moment but they are being bred the frontosas on my site http://www.hurstpointyachts.com/tang-page.htm have bred and the 2" babies are for sale at a cheap price.
BTW the big hump on the head is a big old male - stunning. They breed in groups - absolutly stunning fish. Stay away from discus and fronts, tehy are both addictive. I would love fronts but i dare not look at them. I have threatened to get a single bed in my room so i can fit more tanks in there but the g/friend had threatened to quit if i do!! - Having said that if i get more tanks i won't have time to miss her

Barbie and Tristan, thanks for the info on the Frontosas. I've fallen in love with these fish, I shall read up some more so that I do right by them.
Would lets say 6 be alright in my 6ft tank? Should I get the the wild caughts or the F1s?

That's quite a Discus CV you have there mate. I now know where to go when I eventually succumb to the Discus bug.
Tristan that's a very good point you have there. My Mrs has cost me a small fortune in paint, curtains, wooden flooring and what not recently. That's why I haven't been able to get any more zebras.
