My First Spawn - One of the fry

Post by Dr. P »

Ok, here's the pic of the fry and a couple of pics of his cave and parents. Please excuse the crud that the fry persisted on sitting on. I think its a mixture of poop and chewed/rasped bogwood. I was due to clean the tank but I'll leave it a day and make sure I dont suck out any hiding fry.

In this photo you can see where the fry is situated in the tank, you can also see where the cave with parents is.

Here's a close up of the Dad in the spawning cave and I think that may be the mother of to the right.

I appologise for the poor quality of photos. For one my camera is crappy.....2 my hand was shaking like a mofo!

Oh yes, that's a first time dad alright, he let them out too early :) Or lost them, like mine did. I picked mine up and placed them in a fry trap until they were rid of the youlk sack, but that might be unnecessary?

What do you think Rob?

Think you could be right McEve.

The male has a tendency to either let the eggs role out of the cave, or let the fry loose. he should be quite vigilant until the yolk sacs have gone.

It doesn't mean that he hasn't had a spawn previous however. If he spawned and they were unfertile he would just eat them or kick them out. Then again, if you spotted what you thought was a little foosty food, you would definately see a few foosty eggs rolling about.

I reacon it will be his first, and he's just done a fine job of fertilising them for a first timer!

I managed to get a glimps of more fry in the cave with the male last night using a dimmed torch. I couldn't see how many there were beside him but there is definately atleast 1 in there with dad. :D I recon the couple of stray fry that I see outside the cave was purely down to inexperience.....apart from that, he seems to be doing a grand job.

To tell the truth, I didnt expect it to survive the first night alone out of the cave. With what I beleive to be 1 female and 3 males, I really expected it to be gone the next day but he's still there and kicking! Fingers crossed it makes it.

You didn't expect it to live and you left it there anyway?? Bad daddy, bad daddy!

I don't hink the others would touch it, but that egg youlk is very soft and
easily damaged. I was more worried about that really :)
