Hypancistrus sp. Spawning?

Post by smithrc »

Hi folks.

We have 5 L129's that we bought about 2 years ago to 'practice' breeding in preperation for getting the real thing (or as an alternative if i didnt find zebras)

When we bought them they were small juviniles. They have grown up nicely now and are all plump and well fed.

I thought we had all females at one stage as they were all the same plump body shape - but then 2 or 3 decided to take residence in caves (they are in my fish shed and over the last few months i havent had much time to watch them)

Tonight I did my usual head count and only counted 4... got the torch out to find the caves with their usual inhabitants but one seemed a little more touchy about me peeking - turns out 'he' has another trapped in the cave. how long should I expect a spawn to last - eg how long will 'she' be trapped in there?

I'm a bit worried that it may be another male trapped in there and I'll have a dead body in there in the morning... but i dont want to disrupt them if they are gettin it on

Just checked on them again and there is something going on.

there is still one trapped but not aggresivley - the trapper moved to the mouth of the cave while i was looking and the trapee didnt make a dash for it and there was no signs of aggresion between the 2...

Fingers crossed there will be little orange eggs tomorrow :)
