Power Head

Hello guys, i am new to the forums but i have read almost all of your post. They have help me loads Thanks for that guys

Just got a little question. I am settnig up a new tank. But i am new to this power head stuff. My current tank with my 3 zebs has no powerhead.

My new tank is 54 litersand putting my 3 zebs in there. The power head cycles 1800 liters per hour hour. When i put it in the tank it looks very harsh. A bit vilont in the tank. It does the whole tank 33 time an hour. Is this too much or is this ok?

In my opinion that's too much. The Zebras won't mind, as long they've got something to hold on too

But it doesn't seem very practical.

I believe high level of dissolved oxygen is more important than the current itself, (the powerhead is a means of getting high level of dissolved oxygen in the water) so you might benefit as much from a diffusor as a very strong current.

None of my tanks have a higher turnover rate than 8... and my three groups breed

well i just disided to change tanks and use my 125 liter tank, as later on i want to breed them. the turn over rate will only be 13. but i dont know what it is going to be like in the water yet. I juts dont want too much flow.

Plus i wanna keep the noise down as three tanks together make quite a hum around the house. Do you think this will a better place for them?

Howdy, 33 times an hour sounds a bit harsh. What I have, outside filter (hang on back) doing about 150gph and a power head that pumps 125gph in a 30gallon tank, which comes out to about 9 times a hour.

is a power head important for breeding process? or just to add more O2 in the water that's all.

i've been toying with this one too. I've got various size tanks to equip,
so figuring out what works where is a pain in the rear end. I use
undergravel with all my tanks, as well as an external -on the side of
the tank-kind of powerfilter. I'm just trying to work out the extra
circulation. Oxygen is easy since I'm running undergravel on pumps
anyway. I've got a Seio powerhead that churns out 620gph, or I
get a penguin rated at 270 gph, they cost the same, but the penguin
I can hook up to undergravel , the Seio I cant. Aquaclear has one
that was rated around the 230 gph, similar price to the others and it
does hook up to undergravel. I'm thinking I can actually make an
adapter for the Seio so that its intake is off the undergravel, then
fry dont get sucked in, or even create a sponge trap for its intake.
I like the flow, and really, although in my community type tanks,
the high flow is a big 'shock' but they are getting used to it and
loving it it seems. The bottom feeders, plecos and all, arent the
least bit concerned and seem to enjoy chasing the food around...
I have 1 10 gal tank, with undergravel, a small powerfilter, and
I added a small powerhead that does 80gph(supposedly), but
it doesnt seem quite enough flowjust kinda looking at the one
plant- doesnt move much. ON the other hand 620 gph, how big
of a tank to get right turnover?
