Cave Dimentions?

hi guys,

iv searched the forums and i cant find an answer to this. anyway im going to make some caves so iv got them ready for when my zebs arrive and i need to know the dimentions and any other hints or tips people would like to share i.e best materials to use ect.

what material is strongest so as to avoid caveins if i stack rocks on it

Using the search facility (top toolbar) to search previous topics in the forums will give you the answer much quicker than posting the question.

Obviously there is not set rule for cave size. Here's a quote from Lyretail on some he made:

I made 4 caves - 2 caves internal dimensions are 4 cm wide by 2.5 cm tall and two at 3.5cm wide and 2.5cm tall. All four are 11 cm long internally.

happy? i searched i found a bunch of articlas with cave in them now does anyone know of a strong material that would hold rocks up

Cave-ins?!?!?!...how much rock are you intending to put on them?

Remember rock etc is lighter when in water.

Unless you intend to use all the rubble from the great wall if China or make caves using paper and lipstick with the skill of an inept partially sighted geriatric I doubt your going to have to even consider the possibility of a cave-in.

okay i want to make a cliff like thingy with all the caves in it
were does one find decent rocks the backyard or fish store fish store dosnt carry any nice ones it seems only ones that look like saltwater rocks

Try your local garden centre....they often sell many different types of rock and generally a lot cheaper than your LFS. You just need to be sure that the rock you choose will not alter the Ph in anyway.

Wow, hamish, that is great. How do you drill into that and what type of rock is it?

Buddy- Are you planning on putting caves high up in this "cliff type" arrangement? Because since the zebras are bottom dwellers, they generally will avoid using the higher caves. So it may be somewhat of a moot point.

hi, the rock is made of purple slate from homebase and i used a 40mm diamond core drill to make the caves, they look alittle big but it's just the L260 were kinda young at the time.

Is it just a diamond tip on the drill bit, or is it a whole different type of drill? Also what is the diameter?

Buddy, most people use slate tile and aquarium safe silicone to build caves. Check out lyretail's caves or search aquabid for caves. If you want it to look like a pile of rocks, then why not use a pile of rocks?
