Can we all spread the message...

If it's about fish in general, or it's a little bit random, then this is the place to post it.

Are Zebra Plecos too expensive?

I'll try some Anubius. They are pretty much "bullet proof" but 86 deg F is really topping out most plants for long term health

Plants are the least of your worries...

They only cost a couple of pounds each! If you want an L46 it's another matter. Surely I am not one of a handfull of people who really do want to make a difference?

If it is true that in the next year or so, that prices will drop due to far east breeders swamping the market with "cheap" L46... Why don't we as a community that specialises in these fish do something about it first?

Think about it this way... Who is going to buy your fish when your LFS is selling them for 35 pounds each? If the breeders here are among the first to drop their prices, wouldn't you create a loyal customer base in the process?

Just an opinion... It may never happen... Who are am kidding? What if my vision becomes reality though?

Do you remember the internet boom? Who remembers what happened when that bubble burst? Or what about the devaluation of the yen? Japanese people found that their money was useless overnight.

History will show you that with big profit you run the risk of ruin when nobody wants the tank bred fish that you spent hundreds on getting a breeding colony.

Am happy for you... Well done. You will learn you lesson the hard way. Money is not everything... And if you read through the post again you will realise that we are talking about starting a movement to force prices down. ALSO I am not the type of person to buy a fish throw some flakes in and leave it to die from ammonia or nitrite poisoning because I didn't bother to cycle my goldfish bowl for the required amount of time for the poisons to spike!

I have a 3ft tank that has been cycling for over 3 weeks... not to mention a puffer tank (species tank)... And a 2ft community tank (running for over 2 months, NO DISEASE, not one death)...

How much time, effort, and researsh goes into looking after Zebra? Same as amount as L260 (queen arabesque pleco) would you say? I have two... both healthy... even in a community tank... They aren't even shy anymore. EVEN IN A COMMUNITY TANK!

@ Lyretail...

You hit the nail on the head when you said "Question on poll depends upon if I am buying or selling"... This is very true here.

Although I reasure everybody here yet again... "Not in my lifetime!"

I can appreciate that there is a high demand. I can even appreciate they take ages to grow to maturity... But why does greed always come into it? Surely they don't cost 150-200 pounds to raise?

I simply think the hobby is wasted on greedy, stubborn people. Do it because you want to! Not for the money.

Sincerely

Bader.

long before this forum was made I already did my part in spreading the fish around for the great price of Free and before the exchage program is in effect I am already in the proccess of loaning one of my breeding group or pair to one lucky nameless person, long before the zebra ban took effect I have been breeding and collecting wild fish in hopes that they wont go extinct, I make a killing in breeding zebras, some of my older breeders only cost me $25 US it is difficult to lower the price of zebras when greed takes over compasion.

I admire your honesty. I don't think you are greedy though...

My idea of greed is charging more than 120 pounds (uk)... Which is still a substantial amount... Lots of UK and now German breeders (through export) are chaging circa the 200 pounds mark... that is greed!

Sincerely

Bader
