Importing Zebras

Post by grettonman »

I am considering going to Germany to collect some Zebs. Has anyone any advice as to how store the fish in transit and what I do about Customs.

I may be bringing some Zebs back from Germany in the next couple of weeks. I have a few questions

1. Should they be stored one per plastic bag ?
2. I will be driving back from Germany with them so I estimate 14 hours bagged. Is oxygen essential as I will be buying from a breeder who may or may not have oxygen.
3. Store in an insulated cool box

Any other precautions to take or things to think about ?

If they;re going to be transported for that long (it would be much cheaper to have them flown over) then I would probably do one fish per bag, unless the bags used are quite large.

Other than that, a couple of points.

1. remember to only fill the bag about a third, the rest leave for air.

2. Tape the corners of the bag up with brown tape, last thing you want is a zeb getting trapped in a corner/fold of a bag and then only finding out the worst once you get back home.

You could try using heat packs.... I'd do some testing with them before hand though.

I may be bringing 60 zebs back and being the first time I have dealt with the gentleman I would much prefer to see the white of his eyes so to speak.

I am buying them for myself. I may sell some on. But I do not want bombarding with e-mails or pms asking to buy some. If I decide to sell them I will sell them at a reasonable price and insist on a donation to the running of this web site

good on you GRETTONMAN... we need to keep this place in the black!

What ages of fish are on offer? I am interestd in "one" only though, I want to get my colony started from as many different sources as possible (just thought I'd say that to stop all the connoseurs from lambasting me with their knowledge!).

Kind regards

Bader.

Hi Madmorrocan.

I'm not sure you can ask what fish are on offer when Grettonman has only said 'I MAY sell some on'. Please respect his right to privacy as he has already stated he does not want to be bombarded with emails, pm's (or posts). I'm sure if and when he wants to sell some he will does what he feels is best.

Plastic Mac

PS. You don't need to buy fish from Grettonman to help keep this place in the black. You can make a donation regardless. :D

hi.
if your transporting 60 for 14 hours, oxygen is a must. i
normally get 40 small, 10 large or 4 really large plecs to a 40x40 x40cm box. with about 8lts of water to each box. shipping time is about 30 hours for me
the bags used are box size with no courners for the fish to get stuck in.
heat packs are a must. get the ones for mussle pain they are cheaper and exactly the same as the fish ones. give them about a hour to warm up first as they rely on o2 to work and will not get enough to get going properly in a closed box.
if you need packing bags and boxes i have loads.
