Obvious question: do I have a male of female zebra?

We all know how difficult it is to identify the sex of these fish, so please post a picture in here and we'll try to help you (or at least give an educated guess!).

Obvious question: do I have a male of female zebra?

Post by Rene Rovers »

Hi everyone,

Some time ago I bought a second hand aquarium. It was, amongst others, occupied by this zebra. Now I'm wondering: is it male or female?
I hope you experts can help me, because it's really difficult to say.

By the way, in the last picture it looks like I'm holding it's tail, but I'm not!

Thanks already!

Hi rene,
it's difficult to judge from those pics, but if i look at the bottom pic at the shape of the body i would say a young male. how big is the fish??
i while back ago i read on a dutch forum that you maybe were interrested to sell the zebra. if you still are i am interrested in buying.

by the way try taking a pic from straight above the fish.
take care :D

It's about 7 cm's long. I really don't think it's a young specimen since the previous owner had it for quite some time.
Does anyone else have an opinion?

Hi Rene

Looks like a beautifully marked female without a doubt. Excellent markings and looks like she has never seen a territorial dispute in her life!! Excellent!

The white stripes she has aren't prominent and ivory like most Zebras; more like chocolate-milk. But I'm not sure, it could be the lighting or camera setup. Still great fish!

Hi Paul,

I think it could well be the lighting and/or camera settings. As you can see the white stripes are more prominent in the first few pictures compared to those in the last few. But then again, the difference between these pictures may be ascribed to the fish in it's habitat vs the little box it was in when I took the last pictures.
