Shipping Our Loved Ones...

Post by smithrc »

I keep getting asked about posting fish when I'm selling them...

I've never done it and dont really feel happy doing it. If i was to post them and they died - I'd be gutted - Money in the bank or not - but it seems to be my downfall when it comes to sales.

I've just been asked If I'd ship my male Zebs to the US.

Would you consider it - If so what would be the deal for payment
and more importantly, how would you go about shipping?

Hee hee. For a second I couldn't work out what you meant. Even though I'm English, I've been in America long enough now that "posting" to me means placing a picture online.

Anywho.. I'd be surprised if you couldn't find a buyer in the UK for Zebras - and thus you shouldn't need to ship them internationally.. I have the same issue when I sell fish - my market is restricted - because to me shipping fish makes it too much a business when it's really just a hobby. I'm sure that if I get to the point where I have Zebras for sale, I won't have any problem finding a local buyer.

If you can't find a buyer and decide to ship 'em, you should find plenty of reference posts on shipping fish. From the UK to the U.S. isn't actually a huge amount of time - fish ship much greater distances regularly and do fine.. I hear ya on the potential for them not making it though.
It's not an illusion, it just looks like one.

Posting to the US will be frought with complications, as US customs and Wildlife Protection agency will all require the correct paperwork. If you do ship to the US make sure it's to a gateway airport (i.e. the one the transatlantic aircraft lands at, and not a regional airport), although this can be difficult if the buyer is on the west coast!

Within the UK, APC are the preferred and best carrier. The don't machine sort their packages, and are very used to dealing with tropical fish.

All the best
