Ok, I would like this to be answered by people who have successfully spawned the zebras please...
Cave placement...is the currant cross wise, dead on, at the back?
How many of you use power heads?
How many times do you clean your tank?
What percentage water change do you do?
What is the most effective way you have found to induce spawning?
I know alot of questions but thanks for the input!
Poll question!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi october004,
My caves are generally at right angles to the flow in the tank, some are angled slightly away from the current.
All my zebra tanks have a power head in them.
I clean my tanks everyday to remove uneaten food as I overfeed my zebras on account of there being fry in the tanks. Also food will quickly spoil in a zebra tank due to the high temps.
I change approx 5gals(uk) everyday and larger 20% water changes every four days.
Cool water changes have yielded the most success for me and the manipulation of water conductivity.
Hope this helps.
Adam

The cave is between 45 and 90 degrees towrd the current, it deflects off the front glass so probably closer to 45 degrees.
I run my 20 long on a HOT magnum, but just for circulation. I put a sponge over the intake, that's it.
I clean the tank once every couple weeks and do partials at the same time with tap water, about 10-20 percent. Mine spawn consistantly at a water temperature of 81 F. I know others use "warm" water.
I do nothing to induce. Early on I was adding some distilled water with water changes and maybe that did it but otherwise really nothing.
The whole idea of this site is to help out, I personally never saw the post until today...

It might also mean that people have already answered these questions . I know I did when I posted an in detail post of my tank set up last year. If you read through the past posts, you'll find that most everyone breeding the fish has listed in detail their setup at least once, if not more.
I realize it makes it less convenient for you, but I know that the information is already here on the board, so it makes me less anxious to go through it all again, personally.

I would have to agree with Alge and barbie!
But oh well!
I have my caves at 45 -90 degrees from facing the tank. So the opening is partially facing the current. but i noticed there is a under current in which the caves back are against.
I have 2 powerheads on the far left side and the out take from my Rena on that side as well. The 2 power heads are connected via pvc pipe to one big sponge on the right!
I clean my tank around once a month...but i change water any where from 3-5xs a week to sometimes once a week. Roughly its about 5gals every time...sometimes 15. (60gal)
I think a large cold water change is what induced mine

I'm not so sure where you get the idea that nobody wants to help you comes from, as this site is dedicated to the conservation and breeding of Zebra Plecs..... I found the question rather offputting....october004 wrote: or that no one will help somebody else breed them??
Just curious...
As Barbie said, those that have bred the Zebra have previously given details of their setup, some several times. There's also several articles on this site on how to breed them and tank setups.
I think you'll find that the difficult part is getting them to spawn the first time. After that very little encouragment is needed for subsequent spawns. Have a look around the site and you'll find tons of info.
So true. I've had my zebs for about a year and a half and no spawning activity. I came to this forum and researched everything I could find. Two months later I have 3 fry.I think you'll find that the difficult part is getting them to spawn the first time. After that very little encouragment is needed for subsequent spawns. Now if only if could find a way to good take pictures of my babies.

I found all of the information required for tank setup, breeding, diseases, gender determination, water conditions ect... simply by pressing "search" at the top of this page.
I understand it can be frustrating going through all the posts that are returned in the results, but it is even more frustrating finding the same posts over and over again. Hope you get the info you're after.
Kind regards
Bader.
