Hands or net
Hands or net
I was just wondering what the best way is to catch zebra's some shops use nets and some use there hands but i would have thought that using your hands would stress the fish out even more, i know they say that they get caught up in the net but i dont think they are as spikey as other plecs
I use my hands, personally. Even to remove the male from the breeding trap I put the fry into. He's never complained, and I definitely think it's easier on them than scraping them all over with a net. They don't thrash as hard at least!

The one that I use is a specimen container that the LFS uses to hang on the side of the tank and set bags in? I drill a large hole in the side of that container and seat a piece of aquaclear sponge in the hole. Then I run an air driven sponge next to the box hanging in the water of the parent tank and let it run into the box from the side. This gives me the full benefit of the buffering capacity of the main tank, without having the fry all over where I can't see them. It also lets me really pour the food to them, as it won't foul their tank, and can sit there for a few hours til they get around to looking for it! If that didn't clear it up for you, I'll try to get a picture or two

Hi Du ma,
A breeding trap is normally a plastic container which is used for livebearers to have their young in.
Most of the commercial ones have slots on the bottom, and I find that most of the food ,both powdered and live such as microworm just slips into the main tank instead of nourishing the fry.
I have made my own by using a plastic food container(tupperware) approx 5" x5"x5".I drill 2x1" holes on opposite sides(in the middle) and then silicone a piece of filter bag(nylon gauze) over each hole. I then float the container in the tank, by using 2 bits of polystyrene foam and a rubberband around the top of the container. The outlet of the powerhead is aimed at one of the side gauzes.Any excess food on the bottom can be siphoned out using an airline.
I do however see the benifit of using Barbies idea of using the outlet of a sponge filter into the container. This will give a better flow of water .
Regards,
