Why? Is the L287, L399 and L400 all the same species just different patterns? :?

enjoy!  red cherry shrimp seem to popular at the moment although I know snr69 put some in his tank and they dissapeared. Could be worth looking into. rob I second that! :D Cherry's are great for Zebra tanks! For one, they are timid; they are very weary of anything that comes near them so...

The cave-driftwood design is ingenious, but is it real wood? I can see the Coral Reds got to most of the food, before the Zebras even started.

Or just use an external themostat; I'm currently using a Ranco controller and it works flawlessly.

Hamish, what kind of sand did you use?

hamish99 wrote:1, i would say stay away from sand substrate, i lost 4 zebs when i used it, all good now tho.
How can you be sure the sand caused their demise? Did they injest it? H2S build-up?

Mindy wrote:You need to get straight in your head the difference between alkaline and acid. Your high pH cichlid tank will be more alkaline.
Come on Mindy, no need to get hostile with the newcomer. But he does seem confused. High pH (7.1>) Alkaline; Low pH (6.9<) Acidic. :)

Crushed coral (aka CaCO3) will raise both your kH (thus your pH) and your gH; depending on your tap waters pH/kH this could either affect it greatly or not. Zebra's are pretty tolerant of water conditions, but they prefer (as aquaticclarity suggested) slightly soft, acidic water. A good range to aim...

I just added a ton of them from a fellow hobbyist; they are doing a great job of cleaning up debris, algae and sifting through sand. My only problem is that they stick out like a sore thumb in the black sand and I fear they might be outcompeting the Zebra for food. Does anyone have this problem?

Do you know what the babies were being feed before you got them? The first several spawns of zebras I had kicked off after 45-60 days due to a "meat" only diet. I realize your fish are/were much older then this, but they may still have needed a large portion of veggies in their diets. The...

Substrate from a tank without an undergravel filter will do very little to actually "jumpstart" the tank. Filter media, along with some water from an established tank to not shock the bacteria and also already have food in it so it doesn't starve are much more effective methods, IME. Why ...
