For 6 fish I would go with the 4 foot 33. Good surface area not too tall, better gas exchange since its not overly deep and for my fish room, I try to keep 12 inch tall tanks so I can fit 4 rows of tanks

Yes, mine do too. Mine are a bit different though, in that, the females that use caves, 2 of them, use terra cotta "old style" pots, one never enters any cave and the male takes the onlt slate "breeding" cave.

though most of my tanks are bare bottom I have medium grain sand in with my group of 4, 1male and 3 females. All in all I don't think it matters whether you use substrate or not.

I have one slate breeding cave, 1 inch tall, 1.5 inches wide and 6 inches deep and several terra cotta "breeding" pots ...

What makes you so sure they are not both males.....the eggs?

Everyone told me my two biggest were males and a similar event to yours happened and now I (we) know better.

Tough to tell since its still in the bag . Once its out look for black "tipping" on the edge of all its fins, this to me is a dead giveaway. They are great fish but can be a bit territorial.

Don't. If he is in the cave tending to newly hatched offspring, best let him do it.

Since the young are pretty good size and the difference in size on average looks to be about an inch (2.54 cm) I still think it would be fine and in fact I have a similar set up here at the house, but mine is an adult pair and some younger fish. Hope that helps...

I have been told in the past that zebra's do not eat zebra's, so I'm sure it will be fine.

I agree, adult zebra's will not eat baby zebra's that have stripes, but will/could consume eggs/wigglers if the male kicks them out(again, just because I saw it happen).

I always leave my fry in the tank with the adults until they are big enough to bother dad in his cave.
