After much reading, I have decided to do away with the fine gravel and go for sand instead.

I used to have a very heavily planted tank that had a thick layer of Laterite under the gravel. Many plecs have been in this tank and thrived.
The only problem is that during water changes and gravel cleaning it does stir it up a bit and cloud the water for a while.

That question only got recently answered. When I got them they were a bit too young to be ID’d correctly – and I was given 3 separate ID’s for them.
