Tropheus Duboisi

Post by nesolb »

I'm currently breeding Tropheus Duboisi from Lake Tanganyika. They spawn every 3 - 4 weeks and I generally get 20 - 30 babies each time.

These are then placed in a 2 foot grow out tank until they've reached a reasonable size to be placed in the main tank, this is usually a couple of months.

I tend to have buyers for most of my baby batches so they very rarely get to go in to the main tank.

Hi Damian,

Sounds like a good little operation you have going there. :D

Would Tropheus Duboisi have the light blue face and the yellow vertical band? I'm afraid I get lost when it comes to Malawis.

You got the coloration right Adam, but Tropheus are from Lake Tanganyika ;). This is a picture of the T. moorii (or sp. red depending who you talk to) "Livua" that we keep a colony of. They are definitely interesting fish. Very active and colorful in a display setting, with an almost frantic schooling behavior while they battle for dominance constantly.

There are geographical variances when it comes to the Duboisi colouring. All have a blue face when adults but vary in the colour and width of their band, colour being white or yellow.

The Duboisi I breed have the white band, I beleive these are from the Burundi region.

Damian

P.S The babies are arguebly the most beautiful of all Tropheus young.

Hi Barbie,

That's a beautiful Tropheus you've got there. Have you managed to spwan them?

I also keep Moori Red Rainbow and Murago. Watching them all at feed time always puts a huge smile on my face. :D

I have a little movie clip of some of my Duboisi babies, in 3GP format, which I could upload if anyone would be interested.

Yes, we have fry from the Livua colony. I rarely remove the holding females and the Eretmodus tend to pick off any fry that are released in the tank. I do still occasionally save a batch or two, as I love the look of the little ones swarming around with all of the larger fish. I just strip the females and let the fry grow for a few weeks in another tank and reintroduce them after a rock shuffling party and a good feeding. Rarely even a single loss, but I hear that's not necessarily the norm for them.
