hi im new to everything to do with tropical fish and i am wanting to get a L46 but i know with my expierience that would be really wrong as it need specialised water and looking after ect but i am worried that in a few years time you either wont be able to get one or they will be more than £200 -- which comes to my origional question why are they so expensive at the moment and would it be aright for an inexpierced fish owner to get one without it dying on me
thanks for reading

Hi
To be honest Zebra plecs are quite tough fish. HOWEVER, with the price they are at the moment I personally wouldn't advise an inexperienced fish keeper to buy one. I made SO many mistakes for the first couple of years when I started keeping fish, in fact I still make a few now
I'm not saying you should train with less expensive fish, as every fish death is a waste. But even the most experienced fish keepers think twice about spending over £50. It doesn't take much for a heater to jam and you can loose the whole tank! This happened to me a couple of months ago, but thankfully I spotted the temp. before it got above 32C! The neons were nearly gone but with a few swift water changes I saved them.
If you definitely want to try the attractive L no plecs. I would HIGHLY recommend the L134. I have got five at present and they are very attractive and bold so you get to see plenty of them. Just give them plenty of hiding places, a few caves and some bogwood. They'll eat pretty much anything.
Regards
Tom
