Well the saga continues I guess. Last night the male that beat this male to death had a small female trapped in his cave. There are 3 other females that were MUCH more gravid and large in the tank, but he chose her for some reason. I've never seen one do that before, but this morning he's guarding a clutch of 4 or 5 eggs. I'm just going to be happy that he's doing something besides eating at this point and hope the luck holds. I don't expect this first spawn to be fertile after a hiatus like this, but who knows, I might get lucky for a change .
Nice. So I guess all that killing was for the right to spawn. Don't give up on the first spawn just yet. My zebras never did miss on their first spawn after being off for almost a year.
I've had three hiatus of more than a year with this group of zebras. Of those 3, two had infertile first spawns, one was fertile and I quite honestly assumed I missed the infertile one or something . I don't give up on my fish or these would have gone to a new hobbyist with more patience years ago, hehe.
That clutch netted 10 or 11 fry. The male is finally back on eggs again, I think. He moved to a new cave where I can't see at all whether or not he's on a spawn. He definitely acts like he is though, so here's hoping .
