Hi all,

I've had these for quite a while now (blimey - its been about 2.5 years) - The importer said they were L173's on the list. When they arrived they were about 1". No-one was actually expecting L173's and L399's, L400's hadn't been assigned and the closest out there at the time was L236's...

So now they are some what bigger, what should I be calling them?

Does the importer know where they were collected?

If Belo Monte, there is a mass of confusion.

Looking at Lwelse.com, they could be juvenile L400 or L399, or adult L174.

I have 75 tank bred L333 and the variation in pattern, well if going on pattern they could be 3 different species.

I have 17 L400 wild as identified by planet catfish and pleco fanatics, here again the variation is such, that if going on pattern again 3 different species.

L46 is easily identifiable, and people tell me so is L173 and it is now a different fish.

But if so different from L46 why was the L173 removed from the latest edition of Datz.

If the experts can't distinguish or make up their mind's, what hope is there for the rest of us.

Take care

i would say that they are looking like L174's, however with mine the eyes are a little smaller and a bright metallic gold colour.

i think we can definatley rule out L236 tho.

il try to get some pics of my 174's to post as a comparrision.

have you spawned them yet?

also they look like some fish i saw at wildwoods labled as L287 (they had them down as the rarer spotted variarity) but i think the stripey version is just L399 mislabled.

im buying 5 of these fish from wildwoods so when i get them il post pics!

all the best

Andrew
I bought five mislabbled 287's from Wildwoods in November, and got them ID'd on Planet Catfish as L174.

This is the picture Keith sent me of the tank they were in for id purposes;

Russell, they do look very much like L174's.

Much confusion about L287
L287 was a mislabeled L- number (as the catchplace of the fish was doubtfull later on), this number is not to be used anymore.
Fish are now labeled as L399/L400.

Further info is here: http://www.l-welse.com/reviewpost/showp ... roduct/302

BTW russell i think you're lucky with some extraordinairy specimen's of L399/L400 , specimen's with a high contrast like that and much white on the body go to the far east nowadays where they get the high prices.
