L333

Post by Barbie »

After all these months, performing surgery on the female, and having fish quarantined in their tank when I ran out of room, they've spawned! The male had a pretty good sized egg mass he was tumbling last night :) Hopefully they'll be fertile!

Hi Barbie,
Congrats. Yet another success.Well done.
How large are your pair?.
I have a few young ones. One of the females is only 3" but already filling up with eggs.
I have a female and 3 male Hypancistrus Inspector ?? that should hopefully breed soon, otherwise she might pop !!!!
Regards,
Des.

It isn't a very effective factory, but a girl can dream!

Des my pair are good sized, 5 inches or so. I picked them out of a shipment we got in at the store last summer. I had to describe how to sex them to the wholesaler to get a female. I thought maybe I'd misjudged them lately. He still has eggs tonight, but the test will be if they make it through tomorrow, I'd think. Here's hoping!

Put me on the list for fry, hehe. Good luck with them! I hope they are fertile for you. Time to setup another flowthrough tank for fry.

The eggs look fertile. I can see developing spines in them. There must be well over 30 of them. It will be interesting to see how many of them he can help hatch out! The shape of the cave and the way he likes to hide have made it easier to see into this cave. Now if I can only make myself not stress him out with that flashlight constantly we should be in good shape! ;)

Barbie,

Did the male you picked out ,have larger whiskers, than the female?
How big are the caves for the 333's.
How about some pictures of mum and dad?.

Thanks,
Des.

The caves are the same dimensions I use for the zebras, basically. The width of the male with one pectoral out, just more than his height with his dorsal down, and 1.5 times his length. I've never succeeded in taking pictures that look decent of either one of these fish. They tend to fade right out when I move decor around to try to see them and the pictures just don't do them justice, so I've thrown them out every time. I'll work on that. As he gets more set on caring for his fry I should be able to get a few shots into that cave with the angle it's at. I just don't like to bug them too much until the eggs have hatched.

I just bought a male with longer odontodes, and a longer nose, to be honest, and a female whose head looked small in proportion to her abdomen, with less odontodal growth. There isn't a huge visible difference, even with their large size, but obviously that was enough to go on! Does that help?

To be honest, I bought 3 for the store, and cherry picked from that 3 fish. When I didn't get a female of the bunch, I went ahead and ordered one more. They came from a supplier that thinks rare plecos should cost more, so I rarely buy any from him. I don't usually set up Hypancistrus as just pairs, but it's working, even with the zebras at this point. The eggs should hatch today or tomorrow, so I intend to try to get some picture this evening to show the developmental differences. They resemble L260 eggs in both color and size. There are just more of them, IMO.
