Inbreeding!

Post by clownfish-god »

When we purchase L46 from the same breeder and then re breed them, what are we doing to the blood lines? when will we start to see deformities? I want to get 5 but don't want to get 5 for 5 different breeders?

At about the fifth or sixth generation of direct inbreeding you would start to see a problem. Most breeders have more than a single breeding pair in their program so the odds that you'd receive fry from just one mating are not all that good, IME.

Just to add to what Barbie said, most breeders will also have multiple females. Even if one male is doing all the spawning chances are that the offspring from the spawns will be half brothers and sisters ie same dad but different mum.

Or like myself where the alpha male in the tank has changed. So about a third of my fry now have a different father.
