F1, F2 etc..whats it all about?

I am always hearing about these F numbers when people are trying to sell fish. Now I have worked out (rightly or wrongly) that they are talking about how close the fish is from it original state of being wild and that it has something to do with the generations we spawn from the wild fish . Can anyone explain these f numbers and how they work

F1, first born of wild especimens
F2, born from F1 and so on....

F0=Wild Caught Fish
F1=First Breeding,in a tank, from 2 wild caught fish,F0's.
F2=Breedings from the captive bred fish but with a direct link to wild caught fish.
Etc....................
A fish that is bred from
F0's usually comand a higher price, I suppose its a bit like a pedigree system like in Dogs.
I think this is correct, maybe someone else has a better explination.
