There seems to be a little ray of hope for Brazil

According to Best Friends (http://bestfriends.com/), a magazine we subscribe to, Brazil's president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva "created two new national parks" and "expanded another national park" in the Amazon. He also signed a "decree placing 3.7 million acres of the rainforest off limits for development". "The decree grants environmental protection to 16 million acres" "that cuts through the heart of the rainforest."
Unfortunately, I didn't see a reference for the Rio Xingu River but at least someone in authority is trying to do something. This is definitely a step in the right direction.
Best Friends, "All the good news about animals, wildlife and the earth" publishes a bimonthly magazine on domestic and wild animals all over the world. News worthy articles are interesting, informative, happy and heartbreakingly sad at times. Over all IMHO a worthy cause and you folks may want to check them out.
