Hi all,
my alfa male has had a female trapped for 8 to 9 days now with no sign of eggs, could she be eggbound if so whats the treatment i use for her, normaly traping time is around 5 days.

I didn't know that normal trapping time is 5 days. I've had a lady trapped over night and that was it. I guess it depends on how experienced they are, both the male and the female.

If you can see that she's ok then I wouldn't worry.

the usual length of time for this pair is around the 5 day mark, now they are going in to day 10, they both look ok tho.

They are probably just enjoying themselves then ;) I'm not sure of this, but I seem to recall that I read somewhere that Hypancistus don't get eggbound as a problem like some other fish do? Don't quote me on this one though, as I'm absolutely not sure that this is correct.

Some of the others will come along and set this straight I'm sure :)

We certainly haven't encountered an egg-bound zebra on here before.

It would make sense that it was less common in HZ due to the small number of eggs produced at each spawn. A fish can become egg-bound due to high compaction of the eggs, the less the number of eggs the less likely I would have thought the occurrence would be.

Sit tight hamish and see what happens. Give her another couple of days, I've had one female stay in for almost two weeks, although I suspect she was nipping out every-now -and again.

I've had them cohabitate for more than a month. I even went so far as to dump them out of the cave in case the male was starving her. He wasn't, they were back in there again within a few hours. I definitely wouldn't panic at 10 days ;). Glad to hear it worked out ok!

I'm glad to hear that everything turned out alright in the end Hamish, congrats on the spawn.

The longest cave trapping that I've had was 19 days and it had me pulling out my hair as I was convinced that the female wasn't going to survive.
