Zebra exports banned.
Zebra exports banned.
I don't mean to start a panic, please someone correct me if they know better, but I have been informed by 2 suppliers that the brazillian government has banned the export of zebras. I do hope that this turns out to not be true as it would be very sad for those who are still trying to build a breeding colony.
I'm sorry guys if this is not true but I found this out 3 days ago and I haven't been able to substantiate it. Perhaps someone better connected than me will be able to find out more.

Hi Adam
I've heard the same thing, but once again i thikn it could be scare mongering to up the prices. If it is true, then I am sure it is justified. If not, well I am sure they will soon be on their way to being CITES listed.
If it is true, maybe it will be easier to create breeding colonies with those bred in captivity.
There is a pdf document going about PC, I will try and track it down.

The funny thing is, I'm suddenly seeing L173 listed on wholesale lists, where I've never seen them before. I wonder how long it will take the Brazilian government to discover that little method of getting around them.

I think the authorities will soon be onto that one Barbie, like you I too have never seen zebras sold under their other L number.
This L numbering system that the Germans came up with doesn't seem to be that accurate. I know that the L denotes Loricariidae and the numbers are the region or locality where the fish are found. How is it then that some fish end up having multiple L numbers?
At least there appears to be some truth in what I heard and it wasn't just an internet rumour. I've now had a third south american supplier also say that zebra exports have been banned.

People…
It’s true, no more catching of zebras in the wild is allowed, and, it’s commercialization it’s not allowed too.
I know that by a brazilian exporter who is the supplier of my wife.
But this is expected and necessary… the number of L-46 in the wild is very, very small…
Sincerely,
Paulo

I was told last week by an importer that I trust that there would be no more wild zebras imported. He was contacting me to tell me that my fry would be worth more now, which I thought was very considerate of him. Hopefully they won't immediately build a dam below their habitat and wipe out what zebras there are left.
If these fish DO go on the CITES list, not just an export and collection ban from Brazil, does anyone have any idea what paperwork we'll need to have in order to prove we only have tank raised fry for sale?

Well it was inevitable really I just didn't think it was going to happen so soon. I hope that the Brazillian government make a real effort to preserve the wild population of zebras which should also include their habitat. What's the point in banning their export if their habitat is only to be destroyed by a dam? Surely this is a death sentence for the wild population if it's allowed to happen. A part of me thinks that the building of the dam will go ahead regardless.
The asian Arowana is an example of a CITES listed fish. Trade in captive bred Arowanas is strictly controlled through certification and microchip tagging. I would expect similar controls to be put in place for zebras if they are officially listed as endangered.

Seahorses are also listed on the CITES list, yet we can order tank raised ones out of Brazil regularly on our availability lists for saltwater. If it goes the way of the asian arowana, you'll have to have a permit to even KEEP them, let alone sell any fry you raise. I guess that will be interesting to see what comes out in the wash anyway.
