Hi everyone.

Hope you are all well. I have been offered these fish from a friend but I cannot identify them. What does everyone think?

Hi nice fish

Only ever seen pics pf L98, so can't confirm, but the following may help.

I originally started with 11 L46's about 2 years ago, 3 different sources and all sold as wild with the usual pattern of stripes.

After breeding one of the females lines became broken, and it doesnt and this broken line now appears permanent. All the other lines returned to normal.

One of the young has very irregular patterns, while other fry that have been produced after this have the regular pattern, and also the other fry from this brood have the regular pattern.

While I'll bow to Robs comments about shape, if the pattern on the fish was the usual pattern I would take it for an L46.

My thought is that if particular parents can produce 1 variation on the the adult pattern, they can produce several, and the more tank bred hypancistrus there are the more likely this is to occur.

My guess would be if they are tank bred, they are actually L46's, if not the I haven't got a clue.

Hi Imer,

I have just checked my aqualog book. It looks like it could be an L173 variant to me, however as I have only seen them in a book, I cannot be sure.

I think it could be a bit 'chunky' for L173 (????), could it L316 ('jari' plec), see cat-elog on planet catfish.

Hmmm not sure about the 316 as it is primerily black with white markings. This one is still more white with black!! :?

Imer did the seller give any idea of where it was from?
Imer gab der Verkäufer irgendeine Idee wo, von der es war?

Looking into it further, i got it quite wrong  Look at the discussion 'what are these' to see????' how hard and confusing it is to pin an exact identitiy down without a full morphological study on the fish and comparing it to the type specimen. :?:
