How many Zebras?

Hello all,
I have a 40 Gallon Tank (36Lx15Wx16H). I was wondering how many Zebra Plecos I could safely house in the tank. Also, I have a Sand Substrate in the tank currently but I have been reading a few threads that have me thinking about removing it. Any advice on whether to remove the sand or leave it? Thanks! :D I'm looking forward to diving into the Zebra Pleco world.

As a rough estimate, I'd think no more than about 12/13 zebs in that tank as you need to take in account the amount of floor space they will have...

As for the removal of the sand...some remove it, others leave it. If you do decide to keep it then just leave a very thin layer, the thinner the better. I keep sand in mine as I personally think they prefer it, but it's probably no more than a 5mm thick layer all over the tank base. However, it's no doubt safer to have none at all.

Thanks for the reply. I would love to get my hands on 12 Zebras, but 6 will have to do for now. I will also remove the substrate.

One more question for you fine folks. What would be the best ratio for breeding if I were to get 6 Zebras? 2M/4FM ? Thanks.

yeah 2f to 4m sounds like a pretty decent ratio.
