How do I recognize the sex differences at LDA33?

You got to aim for adults (the bigger the fish the easier it is to sex). Sexing follows the typical Baryancistrus sexing, i.e. male is broader on the head, female has a shorter and fuller body. The leading ray of the pectoral fin is thicker and very spickey on the males. Also the males have spikes at the back part of their body (from dorsal fin backwards). The spikes are short and thin and it looks like the body is hairy. You can see the spikes as they almost "shine" if you see the fish from an angle (very similar to LDA31).

This is a male L81 not an LDA33, but sexing in both these is the same:







The picture in the latest Aqualogue (L177, p. 136, 3rd down on the left hand side and LDA33, p. 135) are also males. You can see the growth on the body. Females are smooth. The fish in my pics is only a juvenile. Hope that helps
