I would like to stress the fact that "F1" does not mean fry from wild caught parents. It just means that the fry's parents were not siblings. It is a method for tracking inbreeding, not a method for tracking generations from wild caught fish. I think the Filial generation tag is misused in fish keeping often and this creates unnecessary confusion

now slightly off topic once its time to pull fry becuase the tank gets crowded could i put the young in a tank with 4 guppys 2 oto's and 2 gouramis and how many babies could be put into that before its full (o its a 10 gallon)

Well I may as well put my two pennyworth in, 2 broods of which I didn't notice until fry appeared, hence natural, 2 removed the young at 7 days and finally one were I saw a young one being ejected, syphoned it up got another 4 so removed the 2 remaining from the cave.

Removing fry at an early stage produced more than 20 fry from one brood.

Who knows what the outcome will be after a few generations, so I reckon I'll adopt both approaches. The reasoning behind this we do need a significant increase in the number of fish available, and from the wants it seems females in particular. As far as I can see it is only males that need to learn parenting, if they do need to learn it at all.

Guess I'm suggesting a balanced approach, and hopefully maintain their natural behaviour for as long as possible, also the species in the hobby.

Filial Generation is about keeping track of inbreeding and crosses when you are line breeding.

The P1 or P generation = unrelated pair parental generation. Could be wild caught but does not have to be. Some people call these "F0's" but that is a non existent term in science

The F1 generation are the offspring from the P generation

The F2 generation are the offspring from mating two siblings from the F1 generation

The F3 generation is mating two siblings from the F2 generation.

Basically this tracks how much inbreeding is being done. After F3 it is time to cross in an unrelated parent and start over with a new P generation

It does get confusing what to call a fish if you mate a P with and F1 ( mother and son etc) The two fish are only 50% same genes instead of the 100% related genes that siblings share
