stange mites

Post by sparkee »

my tank has strange mites and little worms around the front of the tank. the worns are about 3/4mm long and the mites are about 1/2mm, they must have come along with the fish. the fish are fine and i dont think they have been effected. i dont normally use treatments but i dont think these can be good for the fish.
what do i do???

The worms sound like planaria (well they actually aren't, but it's the common name applied to them!). They appear when there is too much uneaten food in the tank and the organics level rises. They are a good indicator that your water quality is in danger and that your feeding levels need to be addressed, IME. The bugs are usually found only in tanks with some floating plants or plant matter, but I have had them in tanks without them a time or two. I always figured they migrated there from the planted tanks. I've never had them hurt anything, and guppies or bettas will usually cut their numbers back drastically. I would DEFINITELY not treat the tank with anything, just do a couple extra water changes a week and clean the filter media well. That will work better than anything!
