Now I am starting to worry I returned my alpha to the main tank yestarday( he has been in the fry tank with his last brood for 20 or so days) I have just got in from my night shift and he has got a lady in his cave again!!! now this guy does'nt mess about this means eggs I am worried because I am cofused do you think that for the last 20 days when he has been raising his fry that he has been sneaking out to grab some grub he does'nt look skinny but I don't like the thought of him not leaving the cave to eat whilst he has been baby sitting then to have more eggs and babies straight away with no break do you think he will be ok I feel sorry for him he must be knackered. :?

Congrats on more eggs but understand your worry on the male getting worn out and not eating :(

I don't have enough experience on this to comment but I had to move a poor bristlenose male as he had 3 spawns on the trot and I was worried too as my naughty females would be constantly trying to get in the cave with him again even when he had hatchlings with him  He's now had a month holiday so will be returning him to the girls soon

Hope your male is ok :)

A little update. There has been spawns every within every 3 weeks without fail through out this year, a week ago there was an extra spawn in with my alpha the whole spawn was totally infertile I am sure this was from a newly gravid female which although disappointing is a good thing . I now have another spawning going on right now and a female trying to get in with the alpha whilst the 2 of them are already in there!!!!
I have now taken a different approach to the breeding I just leave the male in the breeding tank rather than removing him and the eggs, he does such a good job and it seems it is creating more spawnings. I have also left the last 3 lots of babies in the main tank with the colony they are doing great.
Why is the alpha the only male in the tank to breed in such a large adult group or is this just my fish I have only ever had one spawn from one other male in the last 5 years.

Update

Post by Jo's Zebs »

I have had spawns from my Alpha male every month although I think he missed December until I forund some made in December sized fry in the tank any way this month has been madness in the zeb tank the cease to amaze me one more zebs spawning last night from my main little man (Yoshi) alpha male a sub male (yet to be named) spawned just over a week ago got wriggley mini zebs in his cave in his trap with him, another sub male spawned the week previous to that but he wrecked the spawn for the 3rd time this year :( but I am allowing him to learn rather than removing him from the colony ..... so 2 out of 3 this month is very good I think  I love my zebs !!!!! :D
