new fish

Post by sandraponder »

Hello
My user name is sandra in blanco. About 2 days ago, in my L46 tank I noticed new babies. This is my second spawn but I have never seen eggs or can tell which fish are having babies. The first time I saw the free swimming babies was on Jan. 1st of this year. I ended up with 2 and left them in the tank with the parents. this time I removed the babies and one died soon after the move. I still have 5. How often do they spawn and how many do they usually have?

Welcome and congrats on the spawn, it's perfectly fine to keep the fry in the tank. I keep the fry in the tank too and on a later stage move them to a grow out tank.
It's really hard to put a number on how many times they spawn, I've had continuous spawns every few weeks and then months of inactivity for no apparent reason.
The amount of fry started with about 4 fry on the female's first spawn, after that it's been between 6 and 9 fry each spawn.

What did I do wrong?

Post by sandraponder »

Hello
My second spawn has had a problem. After I moved the babies ,which was 6, into a grow out tank, one soon died. All the rest seemed very happy but this morning two more were dead.Should I have left them with the parent fish? I left the first spawn in the main tank and ended up with only two. So I moved the new babies and one of the first spawn to the new tank hoping this would be better. The larger fish is doing well and the other 3 remaining little fish seem to be okay. This new tank is bare bottom but with wood for them to hide. Should I have added sand? Thanks very much Har-eh for the post.

How old ur babies?
Change of water parameters may effect them negative way.

Sandra, moved the post to your original topic to keep a better overview.

Did you let the fish acclimatise before you added them to the new tank?
In this case it would be helpfull to post your water parameters.
How long was the tank running before you added the l46?
Do you have a picture of the tank, would like to see if their are enough hiding places.

Hello
Thanks for all your advice. My fish have
all died except the older one and one baby!
I have lots of hiding places and the parameters
are the same as my parent tank. I took a long
Time on the acclimation and the tank had
been running about 2 months. I'm truly upset
with this whole experience. I'm going to leave
The next ones in with the parents (whenever
that may be). Thanks again for your posts. Sandra

Hello again
I noticed more eggs today. They were between
Two caves that I had close together. Is
This normal? I have 7 caves in the tank with
9 fish. The space between the two caves has
An opening at both ends. The caves are usually
Empty except for two. What's with this?

You can put eggs to a external breeder box with airlift or use floating breeder box. That way eggs/fry are in same tank as parents hence lower the casualities. Frequent water changes will help to maintain clean water.
Good luck.

Eggs usually come out of caves for only a few reasons: the cave size may be wrong, the dad may be inexperienced or the eggs may not be viable/healthy. On thing that can sometimes help is to raise the front of the cave a bit so that it tilts slightly to the rear.

Dying fry can be a sign of something wrong in a tank. Adults may be able to resist it but new babies can not and will succumb.

I can tell you I have gotten over 400 fry in bare bottom tanks.

Pics of your setup might help folks give more specific advice.
