hi i wanted to ask if my powerhead that circulates about 1600l per hour is maybe too strong for my 170 litter tank???
becuase i did hear that zebra's do like a strong current even up to 20 times the volume of the tank per hour.
i hope somebody can help me.
and when i shut down the filter in the evening for an hour for feeding, isn't that bad for my bacteria in my filter or can they survive for an hour?
thanx

Hi Tariq,
I have a 1000l/hr power head in my 200ltr tank and I would say that is plenty. I would be inclined to say that a 1600l/hr powerhead might be a too much in a 170ltr tank. If your power head has the facility I would turn it down to between 800 to 1000l/hr. That said McEve has bred her zebras with a tank turn over of 6 times an hour where as Barbie has bred hers with a turn over of 30 if I remember correctly. I, on the other hand, turn the tank volume over in a few of my pleco tanks as many as 20 times per hour. You'll have problems getting food to settle properly without some cross current, but the fish definitely don't mind, IMO. If you are going to have fish other than plecos in the tank, it will be too strong, if not, they'll love it. They are built for flowing water and really enjoy the oxygenation.

LOL Ed! They'll definitely enjoy current also. Both of the groups I took fry from were in the first boxes in the condo, meaning the most aeration and actual flow rate with no diffusion from the sponges. I guess at some point I should figure out just how much of a rate that is maybe.

Hi Tariq,
I wouldn't worry too much about not seeing the zebras feed. As you've only had them 4 days they need to settle in first, even then you will rarely see them feed as they are mainly nocturnal feeders. I feed my lot Just before lights out, if I feed at other times the food is left uneaten. Like I said don't worry too much about them feeding unless they appear to be very emaciated with hollow bellies.
