Did anybody really think it would not go this way? Brazil may be one of the most corrupt nations in the eastern hemisphere.

I just hope we can save as many as we can because leaving them there will only seal their demise.

Awareness is key.

Brazil just took steps via CITES to make it harder for zebra plecos to cross borders. This includes those tank raised. Because Brazil bans the exports of zebras, they are permitted to request that they be added CITES Appendix III. Basically, what this does is to requires all signatories to the the CITES convention to support a country's ban on a given fish. This requires that when such fish are sent across a national border where either the sending or destination countries are CITES members, there must be documentation included certifying the origin of such fish. This does not apply to things like state borders in the USA or provinces in other countries etc. This makes it a lot harder to move tank raised fish across borders. For the illegal trade it is lust one more expense. They need to pay somebody to lie about the fish.

regarding the future of zebras in the wild, here are several things I know to be true:

1. River levels in the big bend will be drastically reduced year round.
2. There is a lot of polluted water above the dam now. What happens if they let it flow though?
3. People I know who have been to the Xingu in the past few months all report the Big Bend looks awful.
4. An experiment to transplant and establish a zebra population in another river failed completely.
5. There are one or two farms in Asia now spawning zebras on a decent scale. It is no longer being done mostly by home based breeders.
