I have a "bastardized" version of this type of system in my breeder tank. It is only a partial river. I wanted a more elaborate setup, as in the link, but never seemed to get around to it.

I take it additional filtration would be requires or not? I have an empty 400L have been thinking of this kind of setup

The only issue would be if you needed chemical filtration. The intake sponges will provide mechanical and a place for bacteria to colonize.

I don't think you would even need chemical filtration, none of my pleco tanks ever used things like activated carbon.

But if you would want to, getting another small filter just for the purpose of chemical filtration wont hurt.

Almost any snall powerfilter with a media bag would work on an as needed basis.
