Few questions about L046 Care

Post by Alistriwen »

Hi all,

I just found a few of these guys available for sale and before I drop 4 grand on 8 fish I wanted to know the best way to take care of them.

Few specifics I am wondering about are:

Ideal Temperature?

Ideal PH?

Ideal Lighting?

Ideal Substrate?

Ideal tankmates (if any)?

Ideal diet?

I'd like to be able to get them to adult size healthy and happy so that they will hopefully breed for me in the long run. Any help the experts could offer would be appreciated.

First, please add your location to your profile for us ;).

Second, read some threads, try a search for the information you need. There are thousands of posts on all of the subjects you asked about. Once you have an idea what you think you want to do, then post again for clarification. The information is already here, I promise ;).

$500 a piece is about average price for adults here in the US. Actually closer to $600, from what I've been told. A female recently sold on aquabid for more than $1300 at auction. "Worth" is definitely relative when it comes to these guys.

Managed to find someone else selling them for $300 a piece (CDN) and will probably get 6 from him if I decide to go through with it. It's odd that these two batches popped up at the same time, wonder if they're from the same source.

You will find that different folks do and suggest different answers to your Qs. So i will give you mine as long as you realize thats what they are- my way of doing things but not necessarily the only nor the "best" way.

Ideal Temperature? 83-86F- basically discus temps.

Ideal PH? 7 +/- .5 or so. Mine are in 7.4. They will adapt well to most reasonable pH levels.

Ideal Lighting? Not a consideration. In the wild they live where it is very dark. I have some tanks with lights and some without for zebs.

Ideal Substrate? Bare Bottom is easiest to maintain. I have one growout tank that does have small gravel and many folks use sand.

Ideal tankmates (if any)? Other zebras.

Ideal diet? Mostly meaty. For younger zebs only things that are small or get soft. Small plecos can and will choke to death on things like blood worms. I use: frozen cyclop-eeze, daphnia and bbs; Hikari Sinking Wafers; kensfish earthworm sticks and flake, FD brine and tubifex, Nutrafin Flake, kensfish 00 size growth formula, NLS Growth, frozen bloodworms; and all my fish, including all sized zebs, get ken's spirulina w/ garlic every Saturday.

Bear in mind zebs need good current and good oxygen levels.
What makes the common person uncommon is common sense.
