begining with fry

Post by bestfish »

hi everyone i am new on the site.
i love it.
i want to buy a group of zebras but due to the price am going to start with fry. i will be getting 5 or 6 at 3cm. i want obviously a good mixture of sexes, 2m and 3 or 4f. how would i go about this....
what are the probabilitys of getting this ratio when buying the two largest and 4 smallest fry from a batch or two.
also how long will it take for them to reach sexual maturity, i have been told 2 years but i thought it was more like 3 years.
any help would be great thanks.
thanks.

the ratio of getting male or female is equal (if i am not wrong) so if you buy 5 frys then the chance you will get 1 female and 4 males is 1/5= 20% and the chance of getting 1 female and 5 males is 1/6= 16% (if you buy 6 frys) so i guess the more you buy, the better number of female you will get. :D

Welcome bestfish :)

If i would buy a few youngsters i wouldn't go for the biggest or smallest ones, i would take them from the average size ones.
No matter how at 3cm. you can't sex them and you will get a 50/50 chance on the sexes, you just improve your chances on females by buying higher numbers of them.
By buying the small ones you might buy the weakest fish out of the batch and might expect losses instead of females....
Greetings,
John

500 what usd, gbp?
It's usefull to add your location in your profile.
Sexual maturity age would be 2,5 to 3 years.
Greetings,
John

3x2x2 would be fine for an adult group like that, for 5 fry of 3cm. it's way to big

BTW 500 ausd is that for a 3cm. fry or an adult?

John
