If you've got a breeding project on at the moment, (preferably fish related), let us know and you might even get added to the spawn list..whe....hey!

Sturisoma fry.

Post by seven »

My friends don’t appreciate catfish, so it’s always good to share my fry news with others. :D

I currently have 4 batches of Sturisoma fry. I originally thought they were S. Festivum, but Shane on PC has said they are a currently un-described species – and it’s best to call them Long Finned Sturisoma.

The spawns have been down to complete luck. Mr and Mrs Whip spent 2 days hanging out on an internal filter – and I woke up to this.

The fry hatch after 7 days. These are 3 hours old and about 9mm.

22 days old at 2.3cm. (Excuse poo and food!)

40 day old fry at 5.5cm. (More poo and food.)

And at 53 days, at about 6.5cm I released batch one into a grow on tank, as I needed the breeding trap for spawn 4!

These guys are now 56 days old and I’m very relieved to see them moving around the tank to look for food. They were spawned and hatched in a community tank, and many fry were eaten by my Rainbows. I used siphon tubing to get any I could find into floating breeding traps. I have been lucky to have suffered no loses with the fry I managed to get into the traps. I currently have 100 fry from 4 spawns.
I put my success down to a powerful spray bar and tinned green beans.
And shed loads of beginners luck!

Thanks for reading. :D

Thanks :D

Andy
I’ll give you a shout when they are big enough to be re-homed. :D

Rich,
That question only got recently answered. When I got them they were a bit too young to be ID’d correctly – and I was given 3 separate ID’s for them.
Sturisomatichthys Leightoni. Sturisoma Festivum. Or Sturisoma Aureum.

Now they are adults, the experts on Planet Catfish have said they are neither – and that this species is yet to be described and given a name. Plecofanatics people agreed with the Planet Catfish people.
Here is the most recent thread about it.

So until the scientific bods give them a name – I have been told to call them Long Finned Sturisoma sp.
