Power Outage

Post by DanD »

The power went out last night and my King Tiger pleco tank's filter and powerhead didnt come back on so there was absolutely no flow. The other fish in the tank seem fine, the plecos were all near the top of the tank trying to get air. One of them looks like it is in really bad shape though. It is still breathing but it's upside down and not moving. I've got the flow going again. I'm going to do a water change as soon as I can. Is there anything else I can do to save this guy? The other ones seem fine now. They've gone back to their hiding spots

I hope you did clean out your filter before putting it on again, if you did not clean it right away.
Put as mus airstones as you can on the tank and do a big wc.
Greetings,
John

I'm sure this is too late to do much good, but you can also use hydrogen peroxide to aerate in dire emergencies like this. You want to just drip in a small amount near a powerhead or area with high flow. I literally add a couple drops and watch the fish, then a few more. I had to use it to deactivate potassium permanganate once or I probably wouldn't be brave enough to recommend it. It shows improvement for the fish almost immediately. Sorry to hear about your guys. Hopefully they'll be just fine. Usually just getting everything moving again corrects the problem.

I had a severely overstocked tank have that happen and I found fish spiraling their way to the bottom when I checked my tanks before bed. I panicked and forgot the hydrogen peroxide, but I yanked 5 gallons of water out into a bucket and added aerated cool RO water like it was a rainy season. They were better within a minute and I did it twice more over the next 10 minutes. Talk about panicked! I called it my incentive plan to move fish so now that can't happen again ;).

Well unfortunately I ended up losing one of the King Tiger plecos. The rest of the plecos and other fish are doing fine now. Think if I had woken up 20 minutes earlier it might have made it.

Fortunately my Zebra and Discus tanks all turned back on so overall it wasn't as bad as it could have been.
