The end is near!
Belo Monte dam should be operational starting next year. Brazil already sold the mining right of the Xingu riverbed and mining will start as soon as the river bed is dry enough.

Do they really think all zebs are going to vanish after this dam is up and running? Why wouldn't they live farther upstream?

No- not possible. Zebras live in pretty warm water and need lots of oxygen. This is supplied by all the rapids in the big bend of the Xingu where they live. Either end of their territory is bounded by stretches of much more slowly flowing water and a lack of rapids, The result is these calmer waters have lower oxygen content and act as a barrier to migration by these fish up or down river.
There is so much gunk now flowing down the Xingu, a once pristine crystal clear river that this may wipe out a lot of fish before the damn creating a permanent dry season will.

What makes the common person uncommon is common sense.
