Most of my pleco tanks are bare bottom. All 3 zebra tanks are, L134 tank is, 450s growing out with discus and tetras is, L173b tank is, both contradens tanks are. 2 Tanks with a few common bn have substrate.

I don't use sand in any tanks and have only tried it once for a few months.

That is what I prefer. However, many folks like using sand. Whatever works best for you and your fish is what you should do.
What makes the common person uncommon is common sense.

I have noticed that the zebras like making little pits in the sand in their hiding spots, and that's why I gave them sand when I changed their tanks.

unless you have very high current, or if the current is blasting directly onto the sand, I wouldnt worry about sand blowing around. Like said before, I always use substrate, something that still allows for easy cleaning but give the zebs something to dig around.

As for breeding, I know a lot of breeders keep the tanks barebottom, I dont know if that affects breeding, but it does allow for easy cleaning of the tank.
