Pretty much explains itself really. If you have questions about tank set-ups, tank furniture, (caves etc) chuck them in here!

Yellow deposit on Slate... is it safe???

Post by Zebraholic »

Hi Guys,

Just wondering if anyone knows what is the yellow/orange deposit that is in the natural rock slate?? I acquired some natural rock slate recently and some of the pieces has deposits that looks like rust adhere to it?? I tried my best to sand it down but cant get rid of all of it. Does anyone know if its safe for a zebras???

Without seeing a picture, I'd guess it is iron. This may not be a problem depending on other factors - such as having plants in the tank, the size or percentage of iron in the spot, etc. I have several pieces of schist (simialr to slate) with visible iron spots in them and it has not posed any problems. But again, USE CAUTION!!! Sometimes it is better to be safe than sorry.
