Substrate - how deep?

Hi,
I am making a new tank and want to put l046 in it.
I want to use a sandsubstrate. But how deep does the layer of sand need to be to make shure that they wont dig out the glass layer.

The zebras won't dig that deep - mine only dig maybe 1 cm max. However the current in the tank is more likely to sweep up and re-distribute the sand more than the zebras - at least that's been my experience.
Reguardless, I'd try to keep the substrate layer thin - it will stay more clean that way.

Sand substrate should be a thin layer you can get pockets of toxins building up in deep sand.

I don't have sand in mine, I have very fine gravel, appox just under 1" deep. Will that get pockets of toxins in?

I think the whole ananerobic, hydrogen sulfide pocket issue is WAY overblown - I have yet to meet someone in real life who has run into a problem with this.

I'd agree - I'm not denying it happens - I can confirm that it does - but its not the massive problem its made out to be...
I've got dark sand in our zeb tank - about 3/4" deep. never had any problems with it.

i have a 1"layer of fine gravel and lots of mts to help move air pockets
