I am thinking of taking away all the plants and add-on more caves in it as the plant will rot away after while . Do all think its better ?

Hi Drake

My thoughts on your tank as below

1) If the plants are not doing well and rotting away, it will be better to remove them since the condition in your tank are not suitable for those plants.

2) You may want to try moses which survive well and do well despite little lights.

3) Add a few more caves wouldn't hurt, it just leave them with option to choose the next caves.

4) Add some driftwood will be good, as they provide some hiding places for them at times

5) Keep the tank simple and clean, so that you can have the ease of cleaning without disturbing the group too much. Try to position the layout such that the air flow will move the unfinished foods and poos to one corner for easy removal.

Finally, when things are settled down for the zebras, dont bother them too much, leave them with their own business of finding the correct caves and the correct mate. Let nature takes it own courses.

cheers

@ darry: the plants he has in the front are anubias species, they will pretty much grow with next to no light at all. The plants in the back I am not sure what they are, but they appear fine.

Adding more caves may not be good, especially considering the small size of the tank (judging from the size of the powerhead in relation to the tank, either a 5.5 or 10 gallon tank (20 or 40 litres)). More caves = more area for things to build up, more things to impede water flow.

@drake: if the tank is small and you may want to take some caves out and move that wood and plants to get better circulation around the whole tank and not create dead zones.

IMHO, I think it's unwise to create dead spots in a fry/small tank as it can very quickly cause the water quality to deteriorate, and I've often heard of those losing fry/fish to dead corners in tanks. Better just to feed what you know they will eat. If there's always left over food, feed less, easy as that.

my two cents.
