It is 1 - 2 mm gravel, maybe pea gravel is not the name for it.
I picked the name from my lfs when i was buying it, but i hear what you are saying about food getting trapped in the gravel and polluting the tank.
Your Avatar and the bottom picture with the female does show PEA GRAVEL ( which look like tiny pea sized pebbles) unless I am due a visit to the optician !!!!!!. From the pictures they look to be a lot larger than 2mm, and being round/egg shaped has a lot of gaps for food to dissappear !!!!!
