How many Zebs in a 3foot tank is optimum?

Post by psionic001 »

Hi,

I have about 15 Zebs that range from 2-4 years old in a 3 footer with good flow and excess caves and a bare bottom.

Is this too many fish to have in a breeding colony or is it better to have more than less for spawning?

Other than the Zebs there are three corries and 20 tiny Endlers.

Cheers

Hi
15 Zebras in a 3 foot tank is fine. I have a 4 foot tank 380L with 30 Zeb`s 6 ottos and 6 cardinal tetras, and they all get on well together. :aok:

Do these groups breed in those tanks?

If it is not at least 18 inches wide the answer is no, imo. Even if it is, expect to lose a few fish due to fighting when they get to where spawning behavior comes into play. Provide tons of cover and caves.

Yes, more pictures of that tank setup would be great.

Is that water slightly black with tannins from driftwood?

Just an observation regarding zebras and tannin stained water. This comes from the Habitat Link in the site section on Species Info.
The Amazon and some of its tributaries, called "whitewater" rivers, bear rich sediments and hydrobiological elements. The blackwater and clearwater rivers, such as the Negro, Tapajós, and Xingu have clear or dark water with few nutrients and little sediment. The Xingu is crystal clear and carries little in the way of sediment.
The red text is my highlighting.

In my experience... this is way too many. You will most likely loose some once they get older and fight. Their fighting can get pretty vicious.
