Hello Charlie
I use Almond Leaves with my apistogrammas but not my zebras.

They are good for apistogrammas because they like the tannin stained water, and leaves are good hiding places for such small fish, and also a good food source for newly hatched apisto fry.

The only down side to almond leaves is when they start to really degrade they can cause a real mess of the tank floor, the time they take to really degrade can range from one to two months.

Would have to agree with above, I use them with my khoula loaches, but have to be replace every 3 weeks else its a nightmare trying to clean the tank and fish them out.

I use them in all my tanks they have natural anti bactirial benefits also used to help with spawning I even use them in all my delicate shrimp tanks as they help with the shedding process. I change them every 2 weeks and hold them in place with the veggie lettuce clips that sucker onto the side of the tank

I just drop one in when i see a little battle scaring...

I am using htem in a higher dose in the L183 tank along with peat to alter the water to try and get a spawn (and to keep them healthy as they are always fighting)

Anyone tried Oak leaves - I've heard they have the same properties...??

I have never used them in any tanks. But I have been told that oak leaves will preform similarly and they are free right off the trees here. Has anybody else heard this about oak?

From what i have read about oak leaves, they are fine to use in a tank.
Just make sure you pick up freshly fallen leaves off the ground and not any leaves hanging on the tree, so that it is dead leaves you are using.
It also depends how fussy you are about what you put in your tanks as to whether you just give the leaves a quick rinse with tap water or whether you boil them to clean them before putting them in a tank;
